April baby boom at Durrell in Jersey

Spring has certainly arrived in Jersey, and with it two very special and rare deliveries; a gorgeous baby Sumatran Orangutan, Jantho, and adorable new-born Western Lowland Gorilla.

Baby boy Jantho was born in the early hours of 1st April to mother, 30 year old female 'Annette', and dominant male, Dagu, at Durrell Wildlife Park. Visitors have flocked to welcome the new addition to the family of Sumatran Orangutans who has spent his early days safe and cosy in his mother's arms.  The mood at Durrell Wildlife Park is one of excitement and wonder as little Jantho is the first Sumatran Orangutan to be born at Durrell for 8 years!

Durrell is one of the few Wildlife Parks that houses these critically endangered primates and works closely in partnership with the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme in Sumatra, founded by former Durrell keeper Dr. Ian Singleton, to protect them.  There are only around 6,600 Sumatran Orangutans left in the wild and this number is rapidly declining.  Habitat loss and poaching in the tropical rainforests of Sumatra are pushing this species into extinction, so the arrival of this precious baby is a joyous occasion for all staff and visitors.  Join in the celebrations and support the plight of Jantho's relatives at Durrell Wildlife Park in Jersey this spring.

The Western Lowland Gorilla baby boy was born on 9th April, to first time mother 18-year old 'Bahasha' and is the grandson of 'Jambo', the Silverback Gorilla who shot to fame in 1986 when a young boy fell into his enclosure only to be tenderly checked over and guarded by the gentle giant.

Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is an international charity which has been providing support for the conservation of endangered species for over 50 years.  Durrell keeps and breeds endangered mammals, reptiles and birds from all over the world.  You can now spend the night at Durrell camping in luxury amongst rare Madagascan animals for a truly wild experience.
