When it comes to history and heritage, Exeter is bursting at the seams. Pre-dating the arrival of the Romans in AD 50, the city’s history is rich and long. This is reflected in its fascinating collection of heritage attractions, many of which are free to visit.

Exeter Cathedral

In the heart the city stands the majestic Exeter Cathedral. With 900 years of history, this magnificent building is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture to be found anywhere and one of the greatest cathedrals in England. For those with a head for heights, there are special Roof and Tower tours available, providing panoramic views of Exeter and beyond.

Underground Passages

Constructed in medieval times, this network of medieval vaulted passageways was built to bring spring water in to the city. Guided tours operate daily, and there is a fascinating heritage centre to discover.
